Zoox launches paid robotaxi rides in Las Vegas today

Amazon-owned Zoox began charging passengers for autonomous rides in Las Vegas on August 10, converting a year of free service — nearly 1 million riders — into commercial operations. Fares are priced approximately 20-40% above standard UberX rates, with a route-overcharge guarantee. NHTSA has authorised up to 2,500 of the custom bidirectional vehicles to operate without conventional human controls.

Global average EV price falls below global average hybrid for the first time

The global average EV price fell 9% last year to approximately $37,000 — below the global average hybrid price, which rose 16% to approximately $39,000 over the same period. The crossover is driven by falling battery costs and Chinese manufacturers' sustained low-price strategy.

Why it mattersThe hybrid has been marketed for a decade as the rational cost compromise between internal combustion and electric. That argument no longer holds on a global average basis — and Chinese pricing pressure means it is unlikely to recover.

Pony.ai targets 100,000 autonomous electric trucks by 2030

Pony.ai announced plans to scale its autonomous trucking fleet to 100,000 light-duty trucks by 2030, with an intermediate target of 500-1,000 Gen-4 heavy-duty trucks deployed in China within two to three years. Gen-4 autonomous driving hardware costs approximately 70% less than the previous generation; the company has already moved over one billion tonne-kilometres of freight.

Why it mattersAutonomous freight has been building toward commercial scale without generating the headlines robotaxis attract. A 100,000-unit target by a publicly listed company with real revenue is a different category of commitment from a roadmap announcement.
