Each degree of warming buys a month of unlivable heat

A Stanford-led study in The Lancet Planetary Health redoes heat-tolerance limits using older bodies rather than fit young adults. The numbers get considerably worse.

Navier-Stokes, derived rather than assumed

Quanta reports physicists rebuilding fluid theory from symmetry principles using effective field theory, with the Navier-Stokes equations emerging as a consequence rather than an 1800s approximation. The framework also surfaces terms the classical treatment dropped.

A one-picosecond shutter sees through fog and tissue

Rochester's Boyd lab, writing in Nature Communications, uses an ultrafast light burst as an optical shutter open for about a picosecond, converting near-infrared photons to visible light on an indium tin oxide film. Ordinary silicon detectors do the rest.

Engineered E. coli turns kimchi radish waste into plastic

The World Institute of Kimchi engineered E. coli to convert radish processing by-products into the biodegradable polymer P(3HB), picking two gene deletions (gltA and acnA) with transcriptome-constrained genome-scale metabolic modelling. Published in Bioresource Technology.

  • P(3HB) hit 71.95% of dry cell weight, a 78% gain on the parent strain, rising to 75.60% in fed-batch
  • Fed-batch on radish by-product reached 5.75 g/L
  • South Korea processes about 132,000 tonnes of kimchi radish a year, discarding nearly 94% of the resulting 17,000 tonnes of by-product
