Frontier Labs Propose FINRA-Style AI Standards Body
A tri-lab working group of Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google DeepMind, meeting since July, is designing an industry-funded Frontier AI Standards Body modelled on FINRA, requiring pre-deployment audits up to 30 days before model releases. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis formally proposed the structure, a day after Amodei's pacing essay drew cross-industry endorsement.
- Pre-deployment window would require external evaluators to test for cyber, bio, and deceptive-autonomy risks before release
- FINRA model implies a self-regulatory body with legal teeth — not a voluntary checklist
- Open-weight and smaller labs would face higher entry barriers under proposed compute thresholds
