LG Energy Solution's Michigan gigafactory begins producing battery cells
LG Energy Solution's new battery cell factory in Lansing, Michigan started production this week, supplying nickel-based cells for Toyota hybrid and plug-in models. The joint venture with Toyota under the Prime Planet Energy and Solutions banner is one of the largest US battery facilities to come online in 2026.
- The Lansing plant uses nickel-based chemistry targeting Toyota Highlander hybrid and PHEV platforms, not long-range BEV applications
- It joins Panasonic, SK On, and the Ultium Cells Ohio restart as US cell lines that came online or ramped in 2026
- IRA domestic content bonuses apply to US-manufactured cells, improving the investment's economics relative to imports
