The Factory Floor

Solid-state batteries left the lab and entered mass production. Sodium-ion launched its first commercial grid products and broke ground on a US factory. The US set a record storage quarter, watched the White House freeze permitting, and then saw the Senate break the logjam — all in thirty days. The throughline: energy storage has graduated from a technology problem to an industrial logistics race, and the bottleneck is now factories, permits, and supply chains, not chemistry.

Solid-state batteries reach mass production

ProLogium began commercial mass production of all-solid-state cells at 381 Wh/kg at its Taiwan gigafactory, with Gen4 cells independently verified at 400 Wh/kg by TUV Rheinland. Mercedes secured first access to the Gen4 line. BYD confirmed an on-road solid-state test vehicle for 2027 using sulfide electrolyte cells approaching 400 Wh/kg.

Why it mattersSolid-state has been five years away for a decade. A production line running, an OEM with first dibs, and a competitor with a test vehicle on public roads are supply-chain commitments, not press releases.

US energy storage sets a record, gets frozen, then gets unblocked

The US deployed a record 18.9 GWh of battery storage in Q2. Days later, a Trump executive order froze federal BESS permitting and banned imports of inverters, batteries, and grid transformers. By month's end, Senate negotiators reached a bipartisan permitting reform deal expected to expedite grid infrastructure approvals.

Why it mattersThe full arc played out in one month: record deployment, supply-chain seizure, permitting freeze, then a legislative breakthrough. The installed base is now large enough to generate its own political constituency.

Sodium-ion goes commercial

Hithium launched a 4 MWh sodium-ion container system. Canadian Solar began validating a sodium-ion cell targeting 15,000 cycles. Peak Energy broke ground on the first US factory dedicated to grid-scale sodium-ion manufacturing in Sacramento. A lifecycle assessment found sodium-ion carries 25% less embodied carbon than LFP.

Why it mattersThree separate manufacturers shipping, validating, or building factories for the same lithium-free chemistry in one month means sodium-ion has crossed from lab curiosity to procurement option.

AI data centres become a grid-scale variable

NERC issued a Level 3 alert citing AI data centres ramping 500 MW in under ten minutes. xAI installed a 400+ MWh battery at its Memphis facility, the largest private-sector BESS on record. Nvidia launched a formal qualification programme for data-centre battery storage. Victoria, Australia began requiring new data centres to bring their own renewables.

Why it mattersThe entities that created the grid stress are now building the storage to manage it. AI compute is no longer just a load — it is a grid-balancing variable regulators had not modelled.

China's installed solar capacity passes coal

Total installed solar megawatts in China now exceed installed coal megawatts, after the country added roughly 230 GW of solar last year. Coal still generates more electricity due to higher utilisation rates, but the capacity crossover resets the baseline for every new-build forecast.

Why it mattersCapacity passing coal is the structural milestone that precedes generation crossover. The world's largest power system just cleared the first gate.

Europe breaks ground on gigawatt-hour batteries

Giga Storage started a 700 MW / 2.8 GWh project in Belgium using Tesla Megapack 3 units. Greenvolt began a 600 MW / 2.4 GWh BYD-supplied facility in Poland. Germany saw a 5.7 GWh brownfield build and a 900 MW / 1.8 GWh Waltrop project break ground. RWE committed to a 400 MW / 1.1 GWh Netherlands project. Scotland approved 10 GWh in a single planning session.

Why it mattersFive countries breaking ground on multi-GWh storage in the same month means European grid batteries have crossed from demonstration to infrastructure. The regulatory bottleneck has broken.

Solar output surpasses nuclear globally for the first time

Monthly solar generation exceeded nuclear output worldwide starting in April 2025, with the gap widening through mid-2026. Separately, a perovskite-silicon tandem cell built on commercially standard textured silicon hit a certified 30.77% efficiency, and Longi-Soochow set a 34.04% tandem record.

Why it mattersSolar overtaking nuclear in generation, not just capacity, is a one-way crossing. The tandem efficiency records approaching 35% compress the cost-per-watt curve for next-generation utility-scale panels.

CATL: record revenue, restarted gigafactory, rising prices

CATL posted RMB 276.9 billion in H1 revenue with grid storage up 87.5%. Its 100 GWh Debrecen gigafactory, paused after worker nickel exposure incidents, began trial cell production by month's end. CATL and EVE Energy then raised BESS cell prices 8-12%, citing lithium carbonate up 34% since June.

Why it mattersThe world's dominant cell maker simultaneously demonstrated it can build outside China, that doing so is harder than expected, and that the era of falling battery prices may be pausing. All three facts matter for every grid storage project in procurement.

Tesla closes the lithium-to-cell loop

Tesla's Robstown lithium refinery reached steady-state output, feeding battery-grade lithium hydroxide directly to cathode lines inside Giga Texas — now described as the only facility of its kind in the Western hemisphere. A $10.1 billion vertically integrated solar gigafactory in Fort Bend County cleared its key property tax hurdle.

Why it mattersA single company refining lithium, manufacturing cathode, and assembling cells under one roof is the vertically integrated model the rest of the industry has been talking about. Tesla is now doing it, not pitching it.

Dubai solar hits three cents; the cost curve keeps compressing

Utility solar in Dubai reached $0.0299/kWh — a 50% fall in 16 months. Ember's Age of Power report documented cumulative 99% cost reductions in the modular clean-energy stack, mirroring digital computing's trajectory. EU solar deployment hit 33.8 GW in H1, on track for a record 70 GW year.

Why it mattersWhen solar undercuts three cents per kilowatt-hour in a region with capital, the economic argument for alternatives requires active subsidy of the alternative. The Ember framing — that clean energy is on an IT cost curve — makes the trajectory structural, not cyclical.

Invinity's 2.1 GWh vanadium flow battery becomes the world's largest
FlexBase and Invinity confirmed an EPC contract for a vanadium redox flow battery at a Swiss data-centre campus — 1.5 GWh initially, expandable to 2.1 GWh. Flow batteries cannot catch fire, which is exactly what you want next to racks of GPUs.

India deploys 8.2 GWh of grid storage in six months
India added 8.2 GWh of grid-connected BESS in H1 2026, exceeding any full prior year, driven by LFP cell costs falling 43% to $82/kWh. A new mandate requires 10% co-located storage on all new solar and wind from July 2027.
