Synthetic cells complete a full life cycle from non-living chemistry

University of Minnesota researchers built SpudCells entirely from non-living chemical components. The constructs grow, replicate their genetic material, and divide — executing every step of a cellular life cycle without borrowing any evolved biological machinery. They are not alive by conventional definitions. They just do everything alive things do.

Why it mattersEngineering a complete growth-replication-division cycle from scratch, independent of evolved cellular systems, establishes the foundation for programmable biology that sidesteps the constraints of editing existing organisms.

2026 Fields Medals awarded — Hong Wang becomes only the third woman honored

The International Mathematical Union awarded 2026 Fields Medals to Hong Wang (NYU Courant) for proving a long-standing conjecture in harmonic analysis and Jacob Tsimerman (Toronto) for breakthroughs in arithmetic geometry.
