Amazon wetlands emit twice the methane models predict

Flying at low altitude over the Amazon basin, a Max Planck team recorded methane concentrations running roughly double what climate models expect — river deltas 26% above estimates, reservoirs 19% above, regularly flooded zones 13% above. The basin was supposed to be among the better-characterized regions in global methane budgets.

Why it mattersMethane is around 80 times more potent than CO2 over 20 years; a factor-of-two undercount in a region this large puts a measurable dent in near-term warming projections.

Elephants hear ground vibrations through skull and bone

Common midwife toads that survive Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis — the fungus behind dozens of amphibian extinctions — build antimicrobial peptide defenses during the tadpole stage, before metamorphosis exposes them to the pathogen. The study catalogued 1,152 secreted peptides, 1,145 of them previously unknown, with peptide diversity in tadpoles predicting adult survival.

Why it mattersA pre-exposure immune mechanism is directly actionable: captive-bred frogs could be primed before conservation release, giving wildlife programs a rational new tool against an ongoing extinction driver.

Mica replaces polymers in ultra-clean 2D quantum material stacks

Swapping synthetic polymer films for sheets of muscovite mica when assembling atomically thin heterostructures eliminates the contamination layer that degrades quantum device performance, leaving surfaces flat to the atom. The Southampton–NUS method enables stack configurations previously too fragile to build reproducibly.

Ozempic slows epigenetic aging clocks, independent of weight loss

Four white dwarfs were hiding within 65 light-years of Earth

Hubble's ultraviolet channel unmasked four stellar remnants invisible against brighter red dwarf companions in binary systems, one only 25 light-years away — closer than most catalogued white dwarfs. Standard optical surveys had returned clean non-detections for each.

Why it mattersIf the solar neighborhood conceals this many dead stars, local stellar density models need revision, and the same UV method likely applies across the galaxy wherever red dwarfs outnumber anything else.

Antisense drug cuts tau 50–65% in early Alzheimer's Phase II trial

Diranersen, targeting the MAPT gene via antisense oligonucleotide, halved tau in cerebrospinal fluid and modestly slowed cognitive decline in 416 early-Alzheimer's patients — but the trial's awkward result was that tau reduction and cognitive benefit did not track each other, suggesting tau burden is necessary but not sufficient for disease progression.
