Prices Down, Margins Down, Honda Out

Tesla posted a record delivery quarter and got punished for it anyway, US EV prices fell for a sixth straight month, and Honda quietly gave up on the American EV market altogether. The bottom line: the industry is entering a normalization phase where volume no longer guarantees value, price is doing the work subsidies used to do, and the roster of credible players is being reshuffled — some legacy brands folding, Chinese and Korean manufacturers building capacity and cutting prices, and regulators on both sides of the Atlantic deciding EVs are now mainstream enough to tax and steer rather than merely encourage.

Tesla's Q2: record deliveries, shrinking margins, a robot factory, and an unhappy stock

Tesla delivered 480,126 vehicles in Q2, up 25% year-on-year and ahead of forecasts, yet the stock fell nearly 8% as per-vehicle profit continued sliding toward Toyota-like territory.

Why it mattersA record quarter that the market punishes, alongside factory floor reallocated from cars to robots, is the clearest signal yet that Tesla's investment case is drifting away from automotive volume.

US EV prices fall for a sixth straight month

KBB data puts the average US EV transaction price at $56,238 in June, down 4.5% year-over-year, with incentives running at roughly 13% of transaction price.

Why it mattersSix consecutive monthly declines show manufacturers, not tax credits, are now doing the work of making EVs affordable.

Honda discontinues the Prologue, exits the US EV market entirely

Honda told dealers its only US battery-electric model, the Prologue, ends after the 2026 model year; the related Acura ZDX is being killed too.

Why it mattersA mainstream Japanese brand walking away from EVs altogether, right as the segment matures, is a stronger statement than any sales miss alone would suggest.

California's new EV rebate is built to favor Rivian and Lucid over Tesla

Governor Newsom signed SB 168, creating a $3,500 rebate for first-time EV buyers on vehicles up to $50,000 — but California-headquartered manufacturers are exempted from that price cap.

Why it mattersCalifornia's incentive design reliably reshapes national manufacturer strategy, and this one is explicitly written to reward in-state builders over the market leader.

Hyundai and Kia recall IONIQ 5, EV9 and EV6 over battery fire risk

A battery defect prompted a safety recall across older IONIQ 5, EV9 and EV6 units, with owners told to park outside and away from structures until repairs are available.

Why it mattersBattery fire recalls do outsized reputational damage regardless of scale, resetting undecided buyers' safety perceptions.

BYD's Denza Z supercar undercuts a Porsche 911 Turbo S on price and pace

BYD's luxury arm Denza revealed the Denza Z at Goodwood: over 1,500 hp, sub-2-second 0-60, priced around $190,000 in Europe.

Why it mattersA credible, underpriced entry into the supercar segment closes the last performance-car category where Chinese brands had no real foothold.

Hyundai and SK On's $5 billion Georgia battery plant starts production

The joint-venture gigafactory in Bartow County began cell production this month, eventually reaching 35 GWh of annual capacity — enough for roughly 300,000 vehicles.

Why it mattersDomestic cell supply is what keeps vehicles eligible for remaining incentives and insulated from tariff risk; Georgia keeps consolidating as the center of US EV manufacturing.

UK confirms it will tax EVs by the mile from 2028

The Treasury confirmed a new Electric Vehicle Excise Duty from April 2028: 3p per mile for battery EVs, 1.5p per mile for PHEVs, replacing the current zero-rate exemption.

Why it mattersThe UK is the first major market to swap flat EV registration fees for per-mile taxation — a template other governments losing fuel-duty revenue will be watching closely.

Volvo starts EX60 deliveries with a 500-mile top trim

The first EX60s reached customers this week, with the range-topping P12 configuration rated above 500 miles — in a mainstream SUV priced in the mid-fifties.

Why it matters500 miles from a non-premium-priced SUV effectively retires range anxiety as an objection for the segment where most buyers actually shop.

Xpeng's L03 lands in Europe, priced below the Tesla Model Y

Xpeng launched the L03 SUV-coupe in Germany at EUR 34,990 — undercutting the comparable Model Y — and it ships with Google Maps Auto SDK.

Why it mattersChinese brands are now competing on features as well as price, landing precisely on the margin territory Tesla depends on in Europe.
