Three terawatts and a price floor

Global solar capacity crossed 3 TW, the third terawatt arriving in under two years. But the week's sharper signal came from the other end of the cost curve: China's storage prices turned upward after a historic slide, iron-air long-duration storage closed $750 million, and the first new US fission reactor in over a decade achieved criticality. The bottom line: deployment is now moving faster than the infrastructure to absorb it, and the technologies that bridge that gap — long-duration storage, enhanced geothermal, next-generation LFP — are where the money is heading.

Form Energy closes $750M for iron-air long-duration storage

Series G to scale production at Weirton, West Virginia. Iron-air targets 100-hour storage at below $20/kWh using iron rusting and de-rusting.

Why it matters$750M at commercial-plant stage suggests investors believe iron-air reaches utility scale, not just pilot.

Global solar crosses 3 TW milestone

BloombergNEF puts installed solar past 3 TW. First TW took a decade, second under three years, third under two. BNEF expects 9 TW by 2036.

Why it mattersEach terawatt lands faster, moving the binding constraint off the panel and onto grid, storage, and flexible demand.

Oklo nuclear startup achieves first fission

Oklo Aurora compact fast-fission reactor reached criticality — first new US fission reactor to hit this milestone in over a decade. Uses high-assay low-enriched uranium.

Why it mattersAdvanced nuclear has been mostly permitting filings and fundraising. Physical fission is a qualitatively different milestone.

Storage cell shipments nearly doubled in H1 2026

InfoLink counted 467.84 GWh shipped, up 94.8% YoY. Full-year forecast raised to 1,026 GWh. Non-China markets took 53.2% for the first time.

Why it mattersStorage demand is near-doubling annually and growth is increasingly outside China.

China storage prices turn upward after historic decline

After bottoming near RMB 0.4/Wh in mid-2025, system prices averaged RMB 0.5937/Wh by May 2026. Rising lithium costs, tighter cell supply, and overseas demand drove reversal.

Why it mattersThe cheapest cells in history may already be behind us, which reprices every storage project still on a spreadsheet.

GM and LG restart idled Ohio battery cell plant

Ultium Cells resumes production at Warren, Ohio after seven-month stoppage. Rated at over 45 GWh/year of large-format NCMA pouch cells.

Why it mattersIdled US cell capacity being restarted rather than written off, seven months after the EV demand dip shut it.

Saudi Arabia 2.2 GW Neom green hydrogen begins commissioning

The Neom facility entered commissioning at 2.2 GW electrolyser capacity — would be world largest green hydrogen plant.

Why it mattersGreen hydrogen projects have faced deep announced-but-not-built scepticism. Neom reaching commissioning converts aspiration to reality.

Sage Geosystems brings first commercial enhanced geothermal plant online

Creates underground fracture networks using high-pressure fluid injection. Backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, targeting AI data-centre demand.

Why it mattersEnhanced geothermal has been almost ready for a decade. A commercial plant crossing the finish line is a qualitatively different claim.

Longi plans 100 MW perovskite-silicon tandem pilot line

World largest solar cell manufacturer plans 100 MW production pilot of perovskite-silicon tandems exceeding single-junction efficiency ceiling.

Why it mattersWhen the largest manufacturer commits at this scale, tandems are being assessed for industrial viability, not curiosity.

CATL chairman: non-zero-carbon batteries will be left behind

Robin Zeng stated manufacturers failing to achieve zero-carbon production will be left behind, framing carbon as the next competitive dimension. CATL committed to supply-chain neutrality by 2035.

Why it mattersWhen the world largest battery maker calls carbon footprint a competitive requirement, the entire supply chain cost model shifts.
