Stanford solves solid-state batteries' dendrite problem
Stanford and SLAC researchers used X-ray imaging to show that lithium dendrites in ceramic solid-state cells originate inside microscopic pores within the electrolyte itself, not just on its surface — meaning years of surface-coating fixes were targeting the wrong location. Their fix: shape-memory alloy rings that apply constant mechanical compression as the cell heats and cools, deflecting dendrite growth sideways instead of letting it short the cell, verified across thousands of fast-charge cycles.
