Stanford solves solid-state batteries' dendrite problem

Stanford and SLAC researchers used X-ray imaging to show that lithium dendrites in ceramic solid-state cells originate inside microscopic pores within the electrolyte itself, not just on its surface — meaning years of surface-coating fixes were targeting the wrong location. Their fix: shape-memory alloy rings that apply constant mechanical compression as the cell heats and cools, deflecting dendrite growth sideways instead of letting it short the cell, verified across thousands of fast-charge cycles.

Why it mattersDendrite short-circuiting has been the single biggest reason solid-state batteries keep missing commercial timelines. A passive, no-electronics fix that works on any ceramic electrolyte is the kind of result that actually moves the date instead of just extending it.

CATL's contradictory week: record earnings, paused gigafactory

CATL posted RMB 276.9 billion in H1 revenue, up 54.8% year over year, with grid storage the growth engine at +87.5% and the plant running near 95% utilization. Days later, Hungarian regulators halted three production areas at its 100 GWh, 7.3-billion-euro Debrecen gigafactory after nine workers turned up with elevated nickel exposure and a deficient PPE inspection, and denied the Phase 2 occupancy permit outright.

Why it mattersThe two facts describe the same company: dominant enough to post its best storage numbers ever, and still cutting corners on basic industrial hygiene at the plant meant to prove it can build cells outside China. Scaling gigafactories faster than the safety systems around them is a cost that eventually comes due.

Sodium-ion clears two real-world validation bars

Canadian Solar, fresh off shipping 3.7 GWh of lithium BESS in Q2, said it's validating a sodium-ion cell targeting over 15,000 charge cycles — two to three times a typical LFP warranty. Separately, UNIGRID's sodium chromium oxide cells passed Hyundai's abuse-testing program with zero fire and zero thermal propagation across a -20°C to 60°C range, and Hyundai will now co-develop on-site factory storage using the chemistry.

Why it mattersSodium-ion has spent years as the 'someday' chemistry — cheap and safe, but unproven at commercial cycle life. Two credible manufacturers validating it the same week, for two different reasons, suggests it's moving from the lab into procurement conversations.

Lyten circles Morrow's gigafactory for a Western silicon-anode play

US startup Lyten, maker of silicon-anode and lithium-sulfur cells, is in talks to acquire Norway's Morrow Batteries — the gigafactory that survived Northvolt's collapse with working equipment but no funding. A deal would hand Lyten a European cell line already positioned to meet EU Battery Regulation domestic-content rules from 2027, without building a factory from scratch.

Why it mattersSilicon anodes are the next-gen chemistry closest to mass-market scale, and the West has no factory-scale producer outside China. Buying a stranded gigafactory rather than building one is also the fastest way to find out whether Northvolt's failure was about execution or the underlying economics.

Invinity's 2.1 GWh vanadium flow battery becomes the world's largest

FlexBase and Invinity Energy Systems confirmed an EPC contract with Equans Switzerland for a vanadium redox flow battery at a Swiss data-center campus — 1.5 GWh initially, expandable to 2.1 GWh, which would make it the largest flow battery on the planet on completion.

Why it mattersFlow batteries can't catch fire and don't degrade the way lithium cells do, which is exactly what a data-center customer wants next to racks of GPUs. A world-record deployment at gigawatt-hour scale is the strongest signal yet that flow chemistry has a real commercial lane, not just a niche one.

US sets a battery storage record, then Washington restricts the parts

America commissioned a record 20.2 GWh of battery storage in Q2 2026 — more than the entire country installed in all of 2023. Days later, President Trump signed an executive order banning imports of inverters, battery energy storage systems, and grid transformers on national-security grounds, hitting all three components at once in a supply chain still overwhelmingly reliant on China, Europe, and Taiwan.

Why it mattersThe record quarter was built on orders placed 12-18 months ago and imported before the ban took effect. Q3 is the first quarter that has to be built without that runway, which is why domestic LFP supply deals suddenly look less like nice-to-haves and more like the only available strategy.

LG and SK On race to build a US-made LFP supply chain

LG Energy Solution signed a 10-year, roughly $1.5 billion deal with Smackover Lithium for 8,000 metric tons a year of Arkansas-mined, direct-lithium-extraction lithium carbonate starting in 2029, structured to meet IRA and FEOC sourcing rules. Separately, SK On locked an 18 GWh, five-year deal to supply US-made LFP cells from its own American plants to storage integrator NeoVolta.

Why it mattersBoth deals were negotiated before the import ban but land squarely in its logic: a domestic LFP chain, from mined lithium to finished cells, is what determines whether US storage deployment can keep growing once imported components get harder to source.

Saudi Arabia's off-grid solar-and-storage build reaches full scale

The Red Sea Project's isolated microgrid — 358 MW of solar paired with 1.2 GWh of batteries — reached full commercial operation, running a luxury tourism destination entirely off diesel and off the national grid. It follows Saudi Arabia's separate award, earlier in the week, of 2 GW / 8 GWh of grid battery contracts to ACWA Power- and Engie-led consortia, the largest multi-hour storage procurement round outside China and the US.

Why it mattersA fully isolated system carrying 24/7 load through a desert summer with no fallback is a genuine engineering proof point, not a demonstration project. Paired with the country's parallel gigawatt-hour grid procurement, it confirms the Gulf is now doing some of the most advanced solar-plus-storage engineering anywhere, not just buying the most panels.

Nano One's sulphate-free process aims at China-free LFP cathode

Canadian startup Nano One is 85% through engineering on an 800-tonne-a-year LFP cathode line targeting commissioning in H1 2027, using a 'One-Pot' process that builds cathode material from non-sulphate metals or oxides instead of the Chinese-sourced sulphate precursors the industry depends on. Rather than raising capital to build the line itself, Nano One plans to license the process to regional joint-venture partners who bring capital and offtake.

Why it mattersEveryone talks about ex-China battery supply chains; almost nobody has a working process for the cathode-precursor step, which is where the lock-in is tightest. A licensing model is also a more realistic way to scale a new chemistry process globally than one mega-factory.

Wisk breaks ground on a solar-powered, movable eVTOL vertiport

Wisk Aero started construction on a 100-by-100-foot vertiport at Hollister Municipal Airport in California, built to FAA design standards for both piloted and autonomous eVTOL aircraft. The structure is modular and relocatable, and draws its own power from rooftop solar and battery banks rather than a grid connection.

Why it matterseVTOL infrastructure has mostly existed as renderings. A real, solar-powered, disassemble-and-move vertiport at an actual airport, built by a company mid-acquisition by Archer, suggests the ground-infrastructure side of electric aviation is starting to de-risk ahead of aircraft certification, not after it.
