Two Chemistries, One Grid

The week battery storage stopped being a one-chemistry story. CATL commercially launched the first mass-produced sodium-ion grid system while LG and Tesla locked in the largest domestic LFP supply deal in US history — two independent signals that the grid transition now has redundant chemistries. The bottom line: energy storage has reached the stage where supply chain diversity is a market fact, not a policy wish, and the lithium-only pricing era is over.

LG and Tesla Lock In $4.3 Billion Domestic LFP Supply Deal

LG Energy Solution confirmed a supply agreement to produce lithium iron phosphate cells at its Michigan plant specifically for Tesla Megapack 3 systems — the largest domestic battery supply contract in US history, and the clearest signal yet that LFP has won the grid-storage chemistry race.

Why it mattersUS-made LFP at this scale makes domestic grid storage economics viable independent of Chinese cell pricing. The IRA domestic-content credits finally have a supply chain to attach to.

CATL Launches the First Commercial Sodium-Ion Grid Storage System

CATL unveiled TENER Sodium at All-Energy Australia — a 30 MWh modular sodium-ion battery energy storage system warranting 10,000 cycles at 45°C with 95% round-trip efficiency. It is the first mass-produced, field-validated sodium-ion BESS from a major manufacturer.

Why it mattersSodium-ion reaching commercial utility scale removes the critical mineral dependency that constrains lithium deployments. CATL as first mover sets the cost benchmark every competitor must beat.

CATL Doubles Its Flagship BESS With the 9 MWh TENER+

At the same conference, CATL launched TENER+, a 9 MWh lithium container that roughly doubles the capacity of its prior flagship — paired with a global PCS partnership. When the world's largest battery maker doubles its reference product, the benchmark for utility storage shifts.

Why it mattersEvery competing integrator, from Tesla Megapack to Fluence, now has to respond to a new energy-density standard in containerised grid storage.

Pumped Hydro Retreats as Batteries Close the Duration Gap

Australia lost another major pumped hydro project when Alinta Energy cancelled its 225 MW Western Australia scheme, citing cost overruns and battery competition. Meanwhile, Snowy 2.0 revised its cost estimate upward for the fourth time to AU$12 billion — six times its original budget.

Why it mattersEach cancellation and overrun strengthens the investment case for BESS over pumped hydro. Battery costs keep falling while civil megaprojects are structurally exposed to geology and labour risk.

Australia Deployed a Record 2.3 GW of Batteries in the First Half of 2026

The Clean Energy Council reported 2.3 GW / 7.1 GWh of utility battery storage came online in H1 2026 alone — exceeding all of 2025. Australia now leads the developed world in per-capita utility battery deployment.

Why it mattersThe coal-exit-driven storage buildout has hit an inflection point. Investment and deployment timelines are compressing faster than anyone's reference case assumed.

Peak Energy Scales Sodium-Ion With GM Backing, Targeting Data Centres

Peak Energy closed a $108 million Series B led by GM Ventures to manufacture sodium-ion cells at its Sacramento facility, explicitly targeting AI data centre demand as the anchor customer before wider grid expansion. The chemistry eliminates lithium, cobalt, and nickel entirely.

Why it mattersData centres as the anchor customer for new storage chemistry accelerates the cost curve — the same dynamic that grid-scale batteries needed retail EVs to play in the 2010s.

The Nuclear Company Plans 6 GW in Kentucky Using Chinese-Scale Manufacturing

A US startup announced plans to deploy up to 6 GW of pressurised water reactors in Kentucky, modelling its construction on Chinese serial-unit methods rather than the bespoke approach that has plagued Western nuclear. It would be the largest US nuclear announcement in over 40 years.

Why it mattersThe central hypothesis — that the West can match Chinese nuclear costs by adopting serial manufacturing discipline — has never been tested at meaningful scale. This project is the test.

Solar Has Overtaken Nuclear in Global Installed Capacity

Global solar photovoltaic capacity surpassed nuclear for the first time, driven by five consecutive years of installations exceeding 400 GW annually while nuclear remained flat at roughly 390 GW. The crossover does not yet extend to generation — nuclear runs at 85-90% capacity factor versus solar at around 20%.

Why it mattersA cultural and political milestone that changes what 'biggest' means in public energy discourse, and public discourse shapes permitting and investment flows.

Google Signs a 1 GW Virtual Power Plant Deal

Google entered a 1 GW virtual power plant agreement with Voltus, aggregating distributed batteries, smart thermostats, and industrial demand-response assets into a dispatchable grid resource — the largest reported VPP contract by a single corporate buyer.

Why it mattersA 1 GW VPP is larger than many utility peaker fleets. Google is internalising grid management rather than just buying certificates — a signal the hyperscaler era of passive energy procurement is ending.

Beta Technologies Gets FAA Certification for Electric Passenger Flights

Vermont-based Beta Technologies received FAA type certification for its ALIA fixed-wing electric aircraft, clearing the path for commercial passenger operations starting in 2027. United Therapeutics and UPS have combined orders for over 200 aircraft.

Why it mattersFAA type certification is the hardest regulatory milestone in commercial aviation. This makes ALIA real in a way that press releases from competing eVTOL companies have not yet achieved.
